it's so crazy it just might work

So Sahar at the Middle East gave me the go-ahead to do a St. Patrick's Day themed set on March 12--I've been planning on using Thousands Are Sailing* by the Pogues as a veil piece, and I found a version of Aziza done by a Scottish band with pipes and flutes. Thinking about how to top off the set, I wondered if there were any funky versions of Danny Boy out there that I might use. I found a lot of really awful versions of Danny Boy, and then stumbled across, yes, the Johnny Cash version. Perfect! It's tasteful yet emotional, controlled yet heartfelt, and he sings with a slight vibrato that I can treat like a violin. All of you should come see me and help make the whole house cry ;-)

Next step: find inexpensive emerald green costume. I've always joked that I can't wear green costumes because I'd look like a bellydancing leprechaun what with the red hair, white skin and Irish tattoos, but now that's exactly what I need :)

*I first got this whole crazy idea while driving around on Christmas Day listening to the Pogues and really feeling the words to that song, and reflecting that even though it's specifically Irish, it does reflect the larger immigrant experience in many ways. So it seems somehow appropriate.

This sounds really cool! ::scribbles date on calendar:: Maybe I can actually make it up there for a change, too.

Ok, that's something I want to see.

Okay, I love that Pogues song, but cannot picture veil to it. I want to see, because I think it is a limitation of my own creativity that I can't get a veil vision!! Thematically, yeah, that is a good connection. Sounds cool.

There was this album put out sometime a decade or so ago called Lament...on that Peter Gabriel label (Real World)? I have not listened to it in forevah, but your post made me think there could be some interesting irish stuff that is raqs-able on it...

Anyway, sounds like a cool event.

"I'd probably ditch it at the first "and we dance to the music.""

Oh, I like that.

The sail thing is cool. Okay. I see a shape. Not in the shape of a train wreck, either.
